Situated at the geometric center of the Shenzhen, Dongguan and Huizhou city circle on the east bank of Pearl River, Longgang is the bridgehead where Shenzhen projects its influence to east Guangdong and the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone.

The district has a road network comprising seven horizontal and ten vertical trunk roads, with the total distance reaching 1,268 kilometers. The Airport-He'ao Expressway, Shenzhen-Shantou Expressway, Huizhou-Yantian Expressway, Shuijing-Guanjingtou Expressway, Yantian-Paibang Interchange Expressway, and Boluo-Shenzhen Expressway traverse the district. Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway, Beijing-Kowloon Railway, Pinghu-Yantian Railway and Xiamen-Shenzhen Railway converge here. The biggest rail marshalling yard in South China – Pinghu South Marshalling Yard, and passenger terminals Shenzhen East Railway Station and Pingshan (Shenzhen) Station of Xiamen-Shenzhen Railway are also located here. Metro lines 3 and 5 pass through the district, connecting to Shenzhen Airport, ports, wharves and the ports of Hong Kong, all within a 40-minute transport circle.
Longgang is a base for major high-tech industry and an advanced manufacturing industry base, traditional cutting-edge industry clusters, logistics industry and the financial industry in Shenzhen. In 2013, its GDP exceeded 200 billion RMB and is ranked third citywide; industrial value added above a designated size reached 120 billion RMB; fixed asset investment was 56.8 billion RMB, which ranked first citywide; public fiscal budget income reached 13.08 billion RMB; and total retail sales of consumer goods amounted to 47 billion RMB.
Moreover, Longgang is the biggest industrial district and a leader of industries in the city. It is home to Huawei Tech City, Baolong Park in the High-tech Industrial Park, Gaoqiao Demo Area for China-Europe Low Carbon Industrial Cooperation, China South City and Western Culture Creativity Community, and 324 key enterprises with an output value of over 100 million RMB such as Huawei, BYD and Hasee. Its pillar industries include communication equipment and electronic equipment manufacturing, electromechanical and equipment manufacturing, and production and supply of power and heat.
