It is the education and scientific research base. Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Virtual University Park, Shenzhen Polytechnic, PKU-HKUST Shenzhen-Hong Kong Institution, and other educational and research bases are all located in Nanshan.
Nanshan has a well developed three-mode transportation network. Major thoroughfares include Shennan Boulevard, Binhai Avenue, North Ring Road, Pingnan Railway and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway that cross the special economic zone and lead to Guangzhou and Dongguan. There are dozens of express ferries from Shekou to Hong Kong and also to Guangzhou, Zhuhai, and Zhongshan every day. Marine transportation is concentrated in the city's western port cluster mainly comprising Shekou Port, Chiwan Port, Mawan Port and Dongjiaotou Port. For air transportation, there are heliports and the Shenzhen International Airport which is only 10 kilometers away from Nanshan.
The Nanshan district focuses on developing IT, communications, new materials, new energy, biopharmaceuticals, R&D services, advanced equipment manufacturing, and other high-tech industries, as well as port logistics and tourism.
The district has a solid foundation for the development of high and new technologies. Already in place is a diversified industry system covering electronics, textile dyeing and printing, port warehousing, real estate, energy, tourism, food, machining, bioengineering, and new materials.
The Nanshan district is also a logistics center in the west of Shenzhen, with the construction of a modern logistics infrastructure already completed. A logistics road network has taken shape in the district, centered on the seaports in the west, supported by Pingnan railway and Western Corridor, and comprising "four horizontal and three vertical" road networks and sea, land and air networks.
The tourism industry is also quite developed here. Nanshan has a number of theme parks and famous scenic spots including Window of the World, Happy Valley, Splendid China Folk Culture Village, OCT, Zhongshan Park, Sea World, Xin'an Ancient City, the Evergreen Resort, Shenzhen Safari Park, and Nantou Ancient City. Multiple tourism attractions co-exist and mutually complement each other, such as theme parks, urban sightseeing, historic relics, vacation & leisure, and suburban ecology.
Nanshan is home to the city's many major institutions and enterprises, such as the High-Tech Industrial Park, Shekou Industrial Zone, OCT Group, Nanyou (Holdings), Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Polytechnic and University Town of Shenzhen. Over 50 multinational groups including Sumitomo, Alcatel, Thomson, Samsung, IBM, Sanyo and Olympus (Fortune Global 500 companies), plus a large number of famous Chinese and other foreign high-tech enterprises have established plants or R&D centers in Nanshan.
