Samsung Communications Equipment R&D Center in Shenzhen

  Industry: Next-generation IT industry

  Country: South Korea

Invest Shenzhen and Samsung Electronics entered a cooperation memorandum for a communications equipment R&D center in 2013 whereby Samsung would establish a largeCscale center in Shenzhen¨s High-tech Industrial Park.

This project represents a new overseas R&D program for the company that mainly covers base station equipment and cutting-edge communications technologies targeting Chinese and global markets. For Samsung, this R&D center project is the first and most critical step on its grand vision to "building another Samsung" overseas. Therefore, the selection of Shenzhen as the location for the R&D center showed the company¨s faith in the city.

Samsung's choice to base its strategically important communications equipment R&D center in Shenzhen has consolidated the city's leading position in this sector, boosted the competitiveness and creativity of its local IT industry, and attracted leading professionals. With further investment and deployment in Shenzhen, Samsung will create even greater wealth for the city. At present, the R&D center has an R&D staff of over 400, which is expected to increase to 1,000 over the coming 5 years.

When Samsung was considering site selection for its R&D center, the preferential conditions of Shenzhen's policies had few advantages over other cities. However, during the inward-investment process, the staff of Invest Shenzhen provided the Korean company with a full-range of investment services covering introduction, acclimatization and development. The team worked with different districts and departments to answer Samsung¨s questions, and reported specific issues relating to the project to the municipal government. After thorough investigation, Shenzhen's mature and international business environment won Samsung over, leading to its decision to base its R&D center here.
